The underrepresentation of women on corporate boards of directors remains a major corporate governance issue despite policies promoting gender equality in the workplace. This study provides a literature review aimed at analyzing the mechanisms underlying this situation through an integrated approach that combines structural, relational, and socio-cognitive dimensions. The research draws on studies related to the glass ceiling, feminist institutionalism, social capital, cooptation mechanisms, as well as theories of gender stereotypes and legitimacy. The findings led to the development of an integrated conceptual model in which structural constraints influence the relational resources available to women, which in turn affect their perceived legitimacy and condition their access to corporate boards. This research proposes an integrative conceptual framework highlighting the interactions among institutional constraints, relational resources, and legitimacy mechanisms in the production of gender inequalities within governance bodies. Particular attention is given to the Moroccan context, characterized by recent progress in women's representation within governance structures despite the coexistence of reforms promoting gender equality and sociocultural norms that continue to limit women's access to decision-making positions.
