Professional stress represents a major issue within the nursing profession due to organisational constraints, emotional demands, and often challenging working conditions. This study aimed to assess the level of stress and identify its contributing factors among nurses working in healthcare facilities in the Idiofa health zone, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This is a quantitative, descriptive, and analytical study using a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of 780 nurses distributed across 49 health areas. A two-stage cluster sampling method was used to select participants, resulting in a sample of 262 respondents. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire based on the transactional theory of stress and coping developed by Lazarus and Folkman. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS version 24, employing frequencies, percentages, the Chi-square test (χ²), and Odds Ratios (OR), with a 95% confidence interval. The results show that 66% of nurses reported experiencing stress in their professional practice. Several organisational factors were significantly associated with stress, including excessive workload (OR = 1.515; p = 0.00), unexpected overtime (OR = 1.481; p = 0.00), schedules disrupting rest (OR = 1.976; p = 0.00), and unequal distribution of tasks (OR = 1.843; p = 0.00). Insufficient managerial support (OR = 1.589; p = 0.00) and conflicts within the team (OR = 1.470; p = 0.00) were also identified as influencing factors. Furthermore, certain working conditions, such as a stressful physical environment (OR = 2.004; p = 0.00) and a sense of job insecurity (OR = 1.766; p = 0.00) were strongly associated with stress. This study highlights that the level of professional stress among nurses in the Idiofa health zone is high and mainly attributable to organisational constraints, working conditions, and the relational climate. Improving work organisation, institutional support, and material conditions could help reduce this issue and enhance the quality of care provided.
