29. THE DEVELOPMENT OF ISLAMIC FINANCE IN MOROCCO: A COMPARATIVE STUDY BETWEEN ISLAMIC AND CONVENTIONAL BANKING: Anglais

In this article, we study the development of Islamic finance in Morocco through a comparative analysis of Islamic banking and conventional banking. Islamic finance is based on the principles of Sharia, which prohibits interest (riba), prohibits excessive uncertainty (gharar), and promotes risk sharing and asset-backed transactions. In this article, we will start with a theoretical framework of Islamic finance explaining the history, ethical principles and the main financing contracts such as Murabaha, Musharakah, Mudarabah, Ijarah, and Salam. This research then focuses on the Moroccan context, emphasizing the slow entrance of participative banking since 2007 and the regulatory reforms introduced as of 2014 that enabled the creation of completely fledged Islamic banks. This article adopts a qualitative comparative approach and discusses the major differences between Islamic and conventional banking systems in terms of legal framework, financial mechanisms, profit and risk sharing, and relationship with clients. The results show that Moroccan Islamic finance has a high potential for growth due to the religious demand, political stability and the economic environment. However, its development is remains constrained by several challenges, including regulatory adaptation, limited public awareness, governance problems and the lack of qualified human resources. This study concludes that Islamic finance is a credible ethical alternative to conventional banking in Morocco and holds promising opportunities for financial inclusion and economic development.
